Eulogy

It began in Columbus in 2012 as CrossChx, linking fingerprints to medical records, then pivoted in 2017 into healthcare automation as Olive. It became the most venture-funded health IT company ever — $852 million by March 2023, at a $4 billion valuation — without ever converting that into traction inside hospitals. 450 people were laid off in July 2022, 215 more in February 2023. It wound down on 31 October 2023, selling its clearinghouse and patient-access units to Waystar and prior authorisation to Humata Health. CEO Sean Lane's stated diagnosis: fast-paced growth and a lack of focus.

Lessons for the living

Eleven years and $852 million bought a great many directions. The CEO's own word for it was 'focus'.
